Fortnite is adding the Shopping Cart, which might be the first drivable item in the game that players can ride to battle.
Fortnite Finally Adding A Rideable Vehicle?
The Shopping Cart was revealed in the New Updates screen on Monday, May 28, but it was listed as a "coming soon" item.
"Roll into battle alone or with a buddy," the description reads.
This suggests that the Shopping Cart will arrive in both Solo and Squads mode and that it will be rideable. There's no confirmation yet, as there's yet to be a rideable vehicle in Fortnite.
All signs seem to point that way, however. When the v3.0 update was released in March, carts started populating the map. Four of these were even lined up in the racetrack, but they are all filled with junk. It only seemed to be a decorative item rather than something useful.
The update's data revealed something interesting, though. The shopping cart assets were filed under the "DrivableVehicles" folder along with new animations referencing the use of the vehicles. The folder was found in the Athena directory where Battle Royale files are stored.
The Shopping Cart Might Be A Multipurpose Vehicle
It is yet unclear how the Shopping Carts can be operated. For starters, the junk will likely be removed to allow a player and a buddy to "roll into battle" together. The update files hinted that players might have to push it to gain speed, which is realistic as it doesn't seem to have a motor attachment.
Fortnite developers are yet to clarify specific details, such as how fast it can take a player across the map or if players can use weapons while riding it. One thing is for sure, though. If it is indeed a vehicle, it will not be solely a means of travel.
"We don't think there's a need for vehicles with the sole purpose of traversal," Epic stated in the past.
"However, there are plenty of vehicles that could provide unique/hilarious functionality aside from fast movement."
Fortnite Might Have Other Plans For The Shopping Cart
It is also possible that the Shopping Cart has a different use altogether. There is a chance that it might not be rideable after all, and it might only function similar to the soccer balls that players can kick. Although the chance is slim, players will still have to wait until Epic releases the Fortnite update that brings the item into the game.
Fortnite is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and iOS.
