Colors And Patterns A Person Chooses For Clothing May Indicate Weight Problems, New Study Suggests

The types of patterns or clothing a person chooses can indicate a weight problem. According to a new study, researchers discovered that women with a higher body mass index (BMI) tend to buy multi-colored skirts and dresses in darker colors.

Men who have a high BMI will buy black or white trousers.

Obesity And Clothing

The researchers of this study were led by Dr. Charoula Nikolaou, Professor Stuart Gilmour from St Luke's International University in Tokyo, and Professor Mike Lean from the University of Glasgow's School of Medicine.

The researchers argue that these findings could discreetly alert people when they purchase their items of clothing online. The researchers state that online purchases could be used to inform people of harmful weight gain and weight-management.

"Online clothing purchase choices could be used to target non-judgemental messages about weight-management and preventing unwanted weight gain," authors of the study suggested.

Previous research indicated that the color of a person's clothes reflected their mood, how others perceived them and their personality.

To investigate this, the researchers studied the relationship between BMI and the size and colors of clothes that were purchased from a global online store. Between October 2017 and December 2017, information was collected on the body weight, height, and color from over 34,000 customers in 119 countries that had completed feedback forms. The results showed that the clothing size was similar to the BMI and waist circumference.

The results also showed that there was a similarity between colors, patterns, and a person's weight.

The Times reported that women whose average BMI was 27 purchased dotty or stripy dresses. A BMI of 27 is considered to be "overweight". The Times also noted that women who purchased dresses that were a wine-red color had a BMI of 21, which is in the middle of healthy weight.

Obesity

According to WebMD, obesity is described as having too much body fat. In the United States, over one in three adults are obese. A person's weight and high body fat can be determined by using the BMI tool.

BMI is a person's weight in kilograms divided by square of height in meters. BMI can be used to see what category a person is in and if their weight could lead to potential health problems. According to the BMI calculator, people who have a BMI of 30 or higher are considered to be obese.

If a person's BMI level is 40 or higher, that is considered "morbid" obesity and a person should see a doctor immediately.
