Avengers: Infinity War is probably the biggest cinematic event of 2018, and now Marvel is teaming up with Epic Games to stage the biggest event in gaming as well.
Epic Games just revealed an upcoming limited-time event coming to its ultra-popular game Fortnite that will bring over Thanos, who most recently appeared in Infinity War. Epic Games is calling the crossover "Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup." It's a mode that will enable players to scavenge the map for an Infinity Gauntlet with all six Infinity Stones. When equipped, this turns the player into Thanos.
Thanos Comes To 'Fortnite'
Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo are big fans of Fortnite. In fact, they would sneak in rounds of the game while editing Infinity War. This ultimately lead to the idea of a crossover.
"Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe. And after a bit of geeking out over each other's work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas," said Epic creative director Donald Mustard. "About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started."
The new mode will be available for free starting May 8 on PlayStation 4, Xbox, PC, Mac, and iOS. It's not clear, however, how long it'll last.
Fortnite has become an immensely popular game since its release in 2017. It's the biggest game on the planet right now, according to The Verge, and that's largely because of Epic Games' ability to introduce fresh ideas, such as the recent meteor crash, which transformed certain elements of the game in ingenious ways.
It's not clear whether Marvel and Epic Games will partner again going forward, but the idea of crossovers will make any Fortnite player giddy. Also, DC should probably get some love as well.
Avengers: Infinity War
Infinity War has now surpassed a billion dollars in the box office and is continuing to reap even more money. In fact, the film just scored the second-best second weekend opening of any movie ever, just a few million behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Infinity War hasn't premiered in China yet, it should be noted.
At the rate of its box office success, many fans are speculating that Infinity War will eventually push past the $2 billion mark. It managed to collect $1 billion in just 11 days, so it's easy to imagine collecting another billion dollars is within possibility.
