South Korean electronics giant LG Electronics is has unveiled the first Chrome OS-based all-in-one desktop.
LG said it will unveil an all-in-one desktop computer that runs on the Chrome OS at the 2014 International CES which will kick off on Jan. 7, 2014.
The desktop comes with several Google applications and allows users to seamlessly use popular Google products such as Gmail, Drive, Search, Maps, YouTube, Play and Google+ Hangouts.
"LG's Chromebase is an exciting new form factor that expands the options available to customers who want a fast, simple and secure computing experience for the home, school or office," said Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management at Google. "LG Electronics makes great devices that customers love, and we're glad to welcome them to the Chrome family."
The LG Chromebase features a 21.5-inch widescreen Full HD IPS display and houses 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and an Intel Celeron processor. It also includes single HDMI, USB 3.0 and LAN ports. The desktop also has a 1.3-megapixel webcam that takes 720p video and a 5-watt speaker. Chromebase comes with built-in security features as well to keep user's information safe.
"Simple to operate for all types of users, the award-winning LG Chromebase computer represents the successful combination of simplicity, power and great design," said Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT Business Division at LG Electronics. "LG Chromebase is the wave of the future for desktops, expected to be widely adopted not only at home, but especially in schools, hotels, call centers and other business settings."
LG apparently wants to replicate Samsung's success of selling Chrome OS-based laptops with its own version of a Chrome OS-based all-in-one desktop computer, but how LG's Chromebase would fare in the market would likely depend on its price. LG has yet to reveal the price of the machine but more details are expected at its launch at the 2014 International CES. Most Chrome OS-based devices are low priced, so don't be surprised if LG prices it below $300.
