WARNING: Major spoilers about Avengers: Infinity War are discussed below. Read at your own risk.
Even before Avengers: Infinity War premiered, Marvel had already hinted that some of its most beloved heroes would meet very unfortunate fates — in other words, die.
Superheroes rarely ever die in their films, but Infinity War isn't a typical Marvel film. It's the Marvel film — it's the showpiece of all showpieces, the culmination of 18 Marvel films and a decade of its Cinematic Universe. Naturally, dramatic and shocking things happen. Those who have seen the movie already know exactly which heroes meet their grim endings.
Mark Ruffalo Spoiled 'Avengers: Infinity War' Last Year
Half the Avengers died, and so did half of the universe. Thanos is able to complete the Infinity Gauntlet and cause half of all life across the universe to disintegrate.
But back in July 2017, somebody already revealed the ending of Infinity War — Mark Ruffalo, The Hulk himself.
In an interview with Good Morning America at the Disney D23 Expo last year, Ruffalo along with Don Cheadle, who plays War Machine, were discussing what differentiates Infinity War from the previous Avengers entries.
"In this next one, ha — everybody dies!" said Ruffalo, almost saying "half" before stopping himself. It's even funnier considering how Cheadle reacts to Ruffalo casually spoiling the biggest and most important Marvel film to date. Check out the clip below. The spoiler part starts around 2:16.
When this interview hit the internet last year, no one really thought Ruffalo was being serious. As if anyone important ever dies in a Marvel film, anyway. So, people just brushed it off as a joke. Well, who's laughing now? Ruffalo almost revealed the ending several months before the film came out, and no one even paid attention.
Ruffalo has built a track record of spoiling all things Marvel. In October 2017, he accidentally livestreamed a portion of Thor: Ragnarok on Instagram. But aside from spoilers, he also shared on-set photos and videos on Instagram while filming Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War
The bigwigs at Marvel probably aren't too upset over Ruffalo, though, with Infinity War breaking box office records. It debuted to over $630 million worldwide, $250 million of which came from North American screenings.
The film has also earned positive reviews from most critics, with some saying Marvel has managed to pull it off. Others, however, are more critical. Slate, for instance, says:
"Sitting through its 2 hours and 30 minutes is like gorging on tapas: You wind up both overstuffed and unsatisfied."
