Amazon confirms the so-called Fire TV Cube, but beyond the name, there's practically no other information about it, other than it's going to be part of the Fire TV line of streaming devices.
Amazon has put up an email list where users can sign up to get more information once it becomes available. Even so, there's a good chance this device already leaked months ago.
The Amazon Fire TV Cube, According To Leaks
In September 2017, AFTVNews published a couple of photos of what appeared to be two leaked Fire TV devices previously unreleased: one was a square-shaped dongle that ended up being real, and the other was a cube-shaped device, which is very much likely the Fire TV Cube surfacing now. It is said to be a flagship device that will come with Alexa capabilities and typical Fire TV features. Meaning, it'll be a standard Fire TV streaming device but presumably with more dynamic implementation of voice controls.
Smart Speaker?
As the original leaks claim, the device will come with its own speaker, plus Amazon's signature LED light bar commonly found on Echo devices. It will also have far-field microphone abilities, meaning it will be able to hear commands even if the user speaks from a distance, just like on Amazon Echo smart speakers. As for streaming, the Fire TV Cube will reportedly support 4K streaming.
There's very little to glean from aside from months-old leaks, but at least Amazon has confirmed its existence. It's hard to know for sure just how much capabilities it will have as a smart speaker — more importantly, is it going to be as sophisticated as, say, an Echo, to the point where getting a Fire TV Cube will be a better value than getting a standard Echo device?
There's no indication as to when Amazon plans to announce more details, but make sure to visit the website and sign up if you're interested. Pricing and specs remain elusive, but it's likely not going to cost more than an Echo — that is, provided it's not as sophisticated. It could very well end up being the perfect streaming and smart speaker combo, though that's unlikely since Amazon risks muddying up its smart speaker lineup with such a device.
Since the company is already teasing it on its website, an official reveal might not be too far.
