Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge remain to be Oreo-less, but a recent report suggests that Android 8.0 might finally arrive this May.
Samsung-Owned Website Reveals Release Date
The Turkish website with a name that literally translates to "Are we up to date?" and is run by Samsung now lists May 18 as the arrival date of Android Oreo for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The published schedule also states that the Galaxy Tab 3 will receive the update on the same date as the 2016 flagships.
The 2017 versions of the Galaxy A3, A5, and A7 are now scheduled to receive Android Oreo on June 1, a week after the originally announced date. Because of this, many have doubts that Samsung will follow through on May 18 as delays are apparently common.
However, the website had mostly been accurate in the past. The published schedule is specifically for Turkey but if the piece of information is proved accurate, the rest of the world can expect the OS update to arrive in their units around the same time. As usual, various parts of the world will get it on different dates.
Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units that are bound to carriers will also receive it at a later time than unlocked units. Owners should refer to their carriers for announcements on when they will release Android Oreo.
Verizon Releases An Update It Labels As Android 8.0
In related news, Verizon recently pushed an update, which it mistakenly referred to as Android Oreo, to its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units.
The over-the-air update was described exactly as the latest Android software. According to the changelog, it should have a new notification system, UI improvements, and picture-in-picture mode among other features of Android 8.0.
However, it turned out that it was an Android Nougat with April security patch, leading to the disappointment of many. Although the patch protects users against the latest security threats, it is not the Android Oreo that they have been waiting for since its release in August 2017.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge came with Android Marshmallow out-of-the-box. Android Nougat did not arrive on these devices until March 2017, seven months following its release in August 2016.
Many expected that Samsung will follow this pattern, so it was really thought that the March 2018 update Verizon had released was Android Oreo.
However, as revealed by the Turkish website, it appears that the latest Android OS update for the 2-year-old devices is slated for rollout in late 2018.
