Microsoft's Windows 10 Preview Build 17639 Rolls Out To Skip Ahead Insiders: Sets Feature Is Getting Beefier

Microsoft's new Windows 10 Preview Build 17639 or "Redstone 5" is now available to Insiders in the Fast Ring who opted into the Skip Ahead subset.

The center of attention this time around is the tool called Sets, but there are a lot of other changes worth mentioning too.

What Is Sets?

As the name implies, Sets allows users to organize content — from websites, files, documents, and even apps — and put them all into one place. They can make multiple sets of these and access each one via the Edge browser.

"What belongs together stays together — we designed Sets to help you keep webpages, documents, files, and apps connected," Microsoft says.

New Sets Features

With Windows 10 Build 17639, Sets is getting a slate of features to take efficiency and productivity up a notch.

For starters, dragging and dropping app tabs within and between Sets are now a reality. Hitting Alt + Tab now lets users switch between apps that are tabbed together.

In the Multitasking menu under Settings and System, Sets now has a dedicated section. There, users can customize the tool, including how the aforementioned Alt + Tab functionality will work.

One user-requested addition that Microsoft has taken note of is the option to group two File Explorer windows together. The company says it's working on it.

Tabs in Sets are also getting more options when users right-click on them, such as "Close tabs to the right" and "Close other tabs."

On top of that, improvements are making their way to Previous Tabs, including but not limited to the ability to pick out which tabs to restore as opposed to only having the option to restore all of them, and an animation when there aren't any Previous Tabs left to restore.

Last but not least, there are UI improvements to make it easier to open tabs and windows in the File Menu.

On its blog post, Microsoft also listed a number of fixes and enhancements for Sets based on user feedback, and it included some issues that haven't been resolved just yet.

Other Changes

Beyond Sets, Windows 10 Build 17639 is bringing a feature that allows users to see the battery level of their Bluetooth devices, such as the Surface Pen, whenever they're connected to the PC.

Aside from that, the Windows Calculator can now calculate square roots for perfect squares accurately.

The official release of Redstone 5 is expected to arrive sometime in October 2018.
