Perhaps there's no other modern design trend more debatable than the notch. That's in reference to the infamous "monobrow" on the iPhone X, of course — though Sharp and Essential were the first ones to implement it.
The notch is a design decision not born out of vanity but by need. As the bezel-less trend rears on, companies are looking for more ways to get rid of a phone's forehead and chin, but at the same time, they're facing the problem of where to put crucial components such as the earpiece and the front-facing camera, both of which sit at the top bezel. Xiaomi, for instance, put its front-facing camera on the bottom — the chin — of the Xiaomi Mi Mix and its sequels, the Mi Mix 2 and Mi Mix 2S. It also implemented a complex technology involving vibrations to emulate sound coming out of an earpiece.
Vivo, on the other hand, showed off a concept phone called Apex that hides its front-facing camera when not in use and utilizes a sound vibration technology similar to the Mi Mix for calls. Both phones offer pretty decent solutions to get rid of the notch. Yet it seems manufacturers are jumping on the notch bandwagon still. Asus, OnePlus, and Huawei all are doing it. More are expected to follow suit.
LG, on the other hand, is trying to think of whether to do it or not — and what better way to inform its decision than to enlist the opinion of Redditors?
LG Asks People About The Notch
LG has taken to Reddit to hear what people feel about this increasing notch trend on modern flagships, asking, "What are your thoughts on 'the Notch'?" In a now-deleted post, the company said it was gathering information for its research and development department, suggesting that it's currently developing its next flagship and wants to know if it should go with a notch.
LG G7
But hold on. Didn't the G7, likely LG's next flagship, leaked just recently? It featured a notch, it's worth noting, but LG has yet to formally announced that phone. It's possible LG has taken things back to the drawing board, though. Perhaps a new G7 design is being worked on, one without a notch.
It's not clear what LG is doing here. Perhaps its flagship indeed has a notch, and it's simply trying to gauge what users feel about it. If they hate it, LG might introduce changes within the user interface and put an option to hide the notch, like on the Huawei P20 Pro.
