The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are set to receive the ARCore support, which should have been included in the flagship's launch in the first place.
ARCore, Google's answer to Apple's ARKit, supports many flagships today. It is even compatible with Samsung's past flagships, from the Galaxy S7 to the Note 8.
ARCore Coming Soon To Galaxy S9 And S9 Plus
The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are yet to join its compatibility list. However, this will soon change as Google's AR team finally spoke up about the impending release of ARCore Support for Samsung's latest flagships.
"Support for the S9 and S9+ will be added in the next release, which should be released in the coming weeks," a team member said on Github.
Github made the statement in response to Github users complaining about a certain app that won't install on their S9 and S9 Plus.
Although the statement is quite vague, it does confirm that the team is indeed making a progress. The Galaxy S9 owners are hopeful, though, as it means that the support will be released sooner.
Millions Of Android Phones Have Access To New ARCore Apps
Once the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus receive ARCore support, users will be able to access hundreds AR apps, 60 of which were released on March 20.
Ikea and Pottery Barn are now using the technology to allow users to place virtual furniture in their homes via their AR-capable apps. The e-commerce company eBay also has an app, which helps users determine what size of box they'll need for an item.
Among these useful apps are new games that creatively make use of augmented reality for a more immersive experience. The Walking Dead Our World, for example, populates the reality in the screen with virtual zombies that users can fight or hide from. Another popular game is My Tamagotchi Forever, a throwback to the 90s game but with AR features this time.
Over 100 million Android phones are now taking advantage of these ARCore apps. While ARCore remains missing on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, it already works on Asus Zenfone AR, LG V30 and V30 Plus, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Pixel and Pixel XL, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.
The list will still expand, but owners of Android phones with OS 6.0 Marshmallow or older will not be able to receive ARCore support. As for Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, users are advised to stand by for further announcements.
