Ask anyone and they'll tell you that Marvin Gaye wrote some of the sexiest songs ever put to music. Of course, the most iconic is easily "Sexual Healing": it's right in the title! Then again, the song is nothing without Gaye's iconic voice singing the lyrics, and while many have tried to follow in his footsteps, few have ever succeeded.
Then, there's Jimmy Fallon and Steve Carell. They've got the voices, sure, but few people would ever call a barbershop quartet 'sexy,' especially when wearing suits that look like Fruit Stripes Gum. You've got to give them credit, though - their performance on The Tonight Show was about as close as anyone could get to 'sexy ragtime a capella'...
Yes, they've got the crooning down, but it's almost eerie to hear 'Sexual Hearing' from five men in bright yellow, red and green suits. Without the audience's applause, the whole thing would be incredibly disconcerting, and Steve Carell staring directly into the camera doesn't really help the matter.
Everything about the performance is somehow off. Sure, it's funny to watch now, but just wait until you hear five men singing about sexual healing in the middle of the night and see how funny it is.
Also, that cheek-pop was all sorts of wrong. Despite a surprisingly strong (and downright creepy) dramatic performance in Foxcatcher, Carell doesn't seem to be leaving the comedy behind anytime soon.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights at 11:35 on NBC.
