Rebooting a franchise is always tricky, especially such a beloved one like Mad Max. The original '80s films were near-perfect examples of how to do a post-apocalyptic setting without zombies, and they became one of the most influential pieces in its genre. Even if you haven't seen the original films, you've definitely heard a joke about giving up the gasoline or Lord Humongous.
So, is there any hope that Mad Max: Fury Road could live up to its predecessors? It's still too early to tell, but if the trailer is any indication of the final product, Fury Road could indeed live up to its lineage:
It's carnage in the best way: the trailer's got explosions, giant sandstorms and bandits of all shapes and sizes. It's the rock-and-roll version of Mad Max, and while purists may scoff at the action-heavy/non-brooding approach to the universe, Fury Road looks like it could be a whole lot of bloody, fiery fun.
On top of that, the use of practical effects is amazing. Sure, there's some CGI magic sprinkled in the trailer, but the fact that so many of the cars, explosions and locations are real goes a long way to making the movie look great. Let's just hope that viewers won't get tired of the dirty brown-orange palette the film is using...
Mad Max: Fury Road will hit theaters May 15, 2015.
