A new report claims that Marvel was adamant on acquiring the rights from Sony to use Spider-Man in its upcoming Captain America: Civil War movie. However, the talks fell through. Fans will be disappointed since Spider-Man was such a vital character to the Civil War story in the comics.
That's not the only thing, the report also states that Marvel wanted more than just to use Spider-Man; the studio was also interested in producing a trilogy of films, all the while Sony would continue to have creative control, marketing and distribution.
We suspect Marvel wants to introduce the web head to its overall cinematic universe, and that would have been a great thing to happen since Spider-Man is its most famous property. We doubt Marvel will cease from attempting to regain Spider-Man, but with Sony now making moves to continue with its Spider-Man slate, it would likely take years for Marvel to gain any footing in this situation.
Ever since Sony messed up the first two Amazing Spider-Man films, fans have been crying to Marvel to regain control of the character. However, we've always thought that to be difficult since the Spider-Man franchise is a big money maker for Sony. Still, that doesn't mean both studios are unable to work together, and we believe this could happen in the early years to come.
So how did this information leak? The Wall Street Journal reports that talks between Marvel and Sony were divulged through email from documents stolen after the GOP hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment. This is a clear sign that the attack on its servers is hurting the company more than we expected, and it definitely went deep.
Sony Pictures is now focusing on the upcoming Spidey Summit in January where the studio will lay out its future plans for the franchise. We should expect the announcement of new flicks, animated series and first Sinister Six movie.
A Spider-Man film, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might be the greatest thing to hit us since the creation of the Legos, and we can't wait until it happens.
The head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, must not be a happy man right now because the DC Cinematic Universe is taking shape and -- unlike Marvel -- DC has all its properties under full control.
