Epic Games has acknowledged the obvious - that Fortnite Battle Royale is a rousing success. However, the game's rising popularity could eventually lead to the demise of Paragon.
According to the game studio, the latter game has been struggling to achieve mainstream success. Chances are, Fortnite will continue to gather popularity and eventually, leave Paragon too far behind.
In fact, Epic has admitted that Paragon could be looking at a bleak future given the negligible interest that the game has so far generated.
"The humbling success of Fortnite has caused us to question if we have a good path to grow Paragon and make it thrive," Epic Games said in a statement published on its Reddit page.
The company, though, is clear on one thing. Epic will continue its work on the struggling MOBA, so updates and improvements will be deployed as needed.
As proof, Paragon will be bumped up to V.45 this week. From which, fans can expect to get "hero and card balance as well as stability improvements."
Fortnite On Spotlight
It's crystal clear, however, that Epic is compelled to train its attention more on Fortnite, which as of January 2018 has attracted 40 million downloads and counting. With the game exploding, Epic said it was forced to realign resources in order to cope with Fortnite's incredible growth.
"A number of Paragon team members jumped onto Fortnite to help sustain the game as it has grown far larger than anything in Epic's past," the game studio said.
The move also explains why Paragon has been plagued lately by slow development. Prior to V.45 that will drop this week, the last major change Epic had delivered to the game was in June last year. However, as the company conceded, Paragon failed to gain the projected traction despite the title as a free-to-play game.
What's Next For 'Paragon'
As indicated on its Reddit post, there is less visible progress for Paragon as Epic will need to prioritize what to do next. The team members working on the game are locked in a debate if the game will require immediate improvements or if it's best to instead focus on long-term revisions.
Meanwhile, some personnel of the same team was loaned out to the group working on Fortnite. Epic Games admitted was partly the reason development of Paragon had practically slowed down.
The game studio, however, made clear that Paragon will not just fade out and called on fans to send out suggestions that might just revive the game.
"Like you, we would love to find a path that works. And like the community at large, we are not all in agreement on what could place Paragon on a fundamentally better path for all," Epic Games said.
