One of the most critically acclaimed games on the Nintendo Switch is getting a free update. That's right. Super Mario Odyssey's first add-on content is coming this February, which will add Luigi to the mix along with new modes, Nintendo has announced during a Direct Mini presentation.
Luigi's Balloon World
Luigi won't come as a playable character, however. Instead, he'll be the host of Luigi's Balloon World, a name for a couple of new connected modes in the DLC. The first one is called the Hide It mode, which tasks players to find the perfect, stealthiest place to hide a balloon in just 30 seconds.
Then there's the Find It mode, which tasks players to find these hidden balloons under the same amount of time. Players who discover lots and lots of balloons will go up in the Balloon World leaderboards.
"It's like a new form of objective-based speedrunning!" said Nintendo during the presentation. Take note: Luigi's Balloon World won't be available until after the main story in the game has been finished, so make sure to complete the story mode first.
Other Things The Free DLC Brings
The forthcoming DLC will also bring three new costumes for Mario: Knight Helmet, Sunshine Shades, and Musician Hat, plus their respective outfits. Finally, a set of new filters will also be included in the February patch, which can be used within the game's photo mode.
The Super Mario Odyssey DLC is just one of the many announcements unveiled during the Jan. 11 Nintendo Direct presentation, which was heavily speculated about on Reddit days leading up to the actual Direct episode. Among the other titles announced for the Switch include a port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Kirby Star Allies, Fe, and several others. A remastered port of Dark Souls, which fans have been vocally requesting for quite some time, was also confirmed for the console.
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the ultimate best games released in 2017, up there with the phenomenal and award-winning Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not only does it incorporate some elements of open world exploration, it introduced a new mechanic — a sentient hat that possesses different kinds of objects and enemies — that totally reinvented Mario and upended the conventional 3D platformer formula, taking it to new directions.
