Apple iOS 8.1.2 Solves Ringtone Issue, Expands Feature Set

Apple has released iOS 8.1.2, bringing a number of bug fixes and new features to iPhone and iPad users.

The bug fixes in the new operating system have yet to be defined, however it does include a fix for an issue where purchased ringtones were removed from a user's device.

"This release includes bug fixes and addresses a problem where ringtones purchased through the iTunes Store may have been removed from your device. To restore these ringtones, visit itunes.com/restore-tones from your iOS device," say the release notes for the update.

One of the most significant additions to the OS is an update to the Calendar app, which is aimed at making it easier to juggle a busy schedule. For example, users can now view "Week mode" simply by turning their phone landscape. On iPad, the layout of the app has been redesigned to show an Inspector panel in Day mode, allowing users to quickly view and edit details of an event.

Another new feature of the Calendar app in iOS 8.1.2 is Family Sharing. Once Family Sharing is enabled in iCloud, users will see an option for Family Sharing in the list of sharing options. Up to six people in your family can share each others music, apps, movies, books and TV shows, without having to share an Apple ID or passwords. Members can easily share photos and a family calendar to stay connected.

The Calendar app also now includes an option for "Travel Time." Using this feature, users can select a starting location and their device will automatically warn them when they need to leave the starting location to make it to an appointment on time.

Last but not least, Apple has included the ability to use other calendars. Until now, the only calendar available was the Gregorian version that much of the Western world uses, but Apple has now included the Chinese calendar, Hebrew calendar and Islamic calendar.

iOS 8.1.2 is the fifth update for iOS 8 since it was first released in September. The release of the OS has been a tough one for Apple, as it debuted with a number of bugs. Not only that, but the update is rather large, meaning that many users are unable to download it without deleting data from their devices, not to mention the fact it is almost impossible to download on a slow Internet connection. Thankfully the iOS 8.1.2 update is only 28.2 MB, provided users already have iOS 8 installed.

While Apple has had its fair share of problems with iOS 8, two-thirds of all iOS devices are now running the new operating system.
