Smart Storage Startup DataGravity Receives $50 Million Additional Funding

DataGravity, a smart storage startup, has raised $50 million in additional funding barely two months after the venture publicly released its data automation platform for small- and mid-size businesses.

Formed in 2012, DataGravity is based in Nashua, New Hampshire and is the brainchild of Paula Long and John Joseph who were previously instrumental in building EqualLogic (also a storage company), which was snapped up by Dell for $1.4 billion in 2007.

The funding in the Series C round was led by Accel Partners, a venture capital firm. The company's partner Ping Li joins DataGravity's board of directors. General Catalyst Partners, Andreesen Horowitz and Charles River Ventures are some of the returning shareholders.

Before the Series C funding, DataGravity raised funds of $12 million and $30 million in two rounds, respectively. So far, DataGravity has managed to raise $92 million. The company intends to offer a cohesive storage solution for its clients and perseveres to aid local and state governments and small- and mid-size businesses gain an understanding into what can be done with the data being generated by them, as well as provide tools for this "dark data" being raked up.

"We're helping business not just store the data, but giving them insights on it and security on how to protect it," revealed Long, DataGravity's CEO.

DataGravity is looking to make a novel storage platform that has the ability to automatically manage, secure and catalog data that most organizations are unable to analyze due to a paucity of resources or time.

The company's storage hardware, available since October, analyzes a company's data centers and the software employees can deploy this to track and assess all the information that streams into the hardware.

The employees are also able to see who the information has been accessed by or if the files have been altered in the hardware. One can also ascertain which files take up the maximum space and the files can be searched.

DataGravity currently has 90 employees and intends to use the additional funding generated to recruit additional support and sales staff.
