The brief first trailer for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens nearly caught the internet on fire. It is on track to become the most viewed trailer of all time and has been the subject of constant speculation and parody since its release, with Stephen Colbert and SNL all taking a stab at what is to be the next generation of Star Wars films.
But George Lucas wouldn't know anything about that. He hasn't seen the trailer, and he most likely won't.
It sounds a bit shocking that the creator of Star Wars himself has yet to see what is in store for the future of the franchise, but his reasoning makes sense.
"Because it's not in the movie theater," Lucas told Pagesix. "I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there. I plan to see it when it's released."
Fair enough. After all, Lucas most likely has a better idea of where the next Star Wars film will be going storywise than the average fan, even if he is not heavily involved in day-to-day work on the film. Lucas is credited as a creative consultant on The Force Awakens.
The next answer Lucas provided is perhaps even more shocking. When asked if he was curious about where Abrams would be taking the franchise, Lucas once again had a straight and to-the-point answer: "Not really," he said.
Ouch. Sure, that might be because Lucas has a general idea of where the franchise is headed, but there is no denying his words have got to sting for those involved in the new film. Everything will be okay, Abrams. Even if Lucas isn't interested in your work, you can sleep soundly (or restlessly, talk about pressure) knowing that millions upon millions of diehard Star Wars fans are waiting to critique every frame of your new movie. Every fan except George Lucas.
