Marvel's first Star Wars comic is arriving January 14, 2015, and now we have a first-look at some of the interior artwork from John Cassaday.
The comic will be official Star Wars canon and takes place shortly after the events of the original Star Wars film as Luke, Leia, Han and the rest of the gang deal with the aftermath of destroying the Death Star. Along with Cassaday on art duties, Jason Aaron will be writing the series.
If these handful of preview pages (courtesy of Starwars.com) are any indication, it looks like our heroes aren't taking things easy after their victory. They appear to be sneaking through an Imperial checkpoint of some sort. Both Luke and Leia are wearing disguises that might be familiar to fans -- it's the same helmet worn by Lando Calrissian in Return of the Jedi. The rebels set a trap for the Imperials and before you know it, a heap of stormtroopers are on the ground. Check out the pages below.
Jason Aaron told Marvel.com that he views the comic as a direct sequel to the original film, and will look to establish the same look, feel and tone of A New Hope. As for the story, he says it will explore the gap in time between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, as Luke continues to grow into a rebel leader and Han is debating just how big of a role he wants to play in the Rebel Alliance.
"You look at the gap between Episodes IV and V and there's quite a bit that happens off screen that we get to explore," Aaron says.
In addition to the main Star Wars series, Marvel will also be releasing two mini-series starring Darth Vader and Princess Leia. Darth Vader is coming in February and Princess Leia in March.
So what happens next? We'll all have to wait until January 14 to find out.
