The OnePlus 5 will soon be discontinued as the focus shifts to the OnePlus 5T, an announcement that should not come as a surprise.
The OnePlus 5T, which was officially unveiled on Nov. 16 in New York and launching to the market Nov. 21, is an upgraded version of the OnePlus 5 as the company continues to release smartphones that many consider as flagship killers.
OnePlus 5 Discontinued By The End Of 2017
Vikas Aggarwal, the general manager of OnePlus India, noted in an interview with The Indian Express that the OnePlus 3T, the company's product before the OnePlus 5, was sold out during the Diwali festival at the end of May and discontinued afterward.
"The same goes for the OnePlus 5, which will also be sold out in sometime, and we'll have only one product — OnePlus 5T — in the market," Aggarwal added. The executive then continued by saying that the company wants to only have its latest device available in the market.
The decision by OnePlus is an expected one, especially considering that it does not view the OnePlus 5T as a major upgrade to the OnePlus. There is no reason at all to keep the two devices on the market.
The remaining OnePlus 5 stocks will likely be sold out before the end of the year, after which the smartphone will be discontinued.
OnePlus 5 vs OnePlus 5T
Customers who purchased the OnePlus 5 earlier in the year are now scratching their heads. It may have been better if they waited a few months before purchasing a OnePlus smartphone, but they might not have thought that the OnePlus 5T would come so soon.
While OnePlus might look at the OnePlus 5T as a minor upgrade to the OnePlus 5, some customers might look at it in a different light. The OnePlus 5T features a new 18:9 screen and a bezel-less design similar to the iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8, pushing the fingerprint scanner to the back of the smartphone. The OnePlus 5T also exchanged the zoom capabilities of the OnePlus 5 for better pictures in low-light situations and comes with a new Face Unlock feature that are in certain situations better than the iPhone X's Face ID. The OnePlus 5T also comes with the Dash Charge feature and a headphone jack.
The OnePlus 5T is the latest attempt at a flagship killer by OnePlus, and at a price tag of only $499, the smartphone is certainly worthy of the label.
