November is now over, and with a fresh month comes freshly shaved men. Last month, men worldwide took part in No-Shave Movember. The health campaign asks men to grow out their facial hair to raise awareness and money for cancer.
While many men may be sad to see their beards go, they will be happy to learn that growing that 'stach resulted in some serious cash for cancer research. With more than 715,000 participants globally, Movember this year raised more than $69 million thus far and the money keeps growing.
Even though these figures seem impressive, last year had 969,188 participants who raised $116 million.
"We're realistic and, like any organization, are aware that there will be some years that are stronger than others in terms of participation," a Movember spokesperson stated in an email. "However, our community has funded more than 800 programs that are making a tangible difference for men's health."
The U.S. had a total of 166,034 people registered to support the good cause, but it was Canada who put their money where their mustache is, raising over $18 million.
Thanks to funding generated from the Movember campaign, a new genetic test is now available that predicts the occurrence of prostate cancer for high-risk men. Movember also launched its $36 million investment, TrueNTH, which aims to improve the quality of life for male cancer patients.
Since it first launched 11 years ago, the Movember campaign has raised $600 million. While we continue to keep track of how much money was raised for 2014, check out this parody telling men it's time to "Shave It Off."
