PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds may never get a sequel, according to PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene.
The possibility that there will be no PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 2 is not due to performance though, as the Battle Royale-inspired multiplayer shooter has broken all kinds of Steam records despite still being an unfinished game.
No 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' Sequel Coming Soon
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has reached all-new peaks of popularity. The PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds full release has been pushed back to the end of the year, but players are already speculating on what developer Bluehole Studio could add to a sequel.
PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, had something to say about a possible sequel to the multiplayer shooter in an interview with IGN. Specifically, Green said that there might not be one.
Greene was asked whether the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 2 is within the plans for the next five years. He responded by saying that players should expect PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds to take a games-a-service model. This means that Bluehole will continue to roll out updates and patches for the multiplayer shooter, instead of spending resources on creating a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds sequel. The recent change being tested to increase the blue zone damage is just one example of the many things that the developers may be thinking to improve the game.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will take a different path than other popular shooters such as Call of Duty and Halo, which have spawned numerous titles over the lifetime of their franchises. Instead, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will grow like Minecraft, with developers to keep adding new content to the games. The core mechanics of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds are simple but fun, and there are so many possibilities for upcoming content that there is simply no time to think about a sequel.
Greene's answer does not necessarily mean that the chances for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 2 are zero, but that is currently not the focus, and might not be for the next several years.
'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' To Launch On Xbox One This Year
In the interview, Greene also clarified that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for the Xbox One will be available both digitally and physically, and that he is excited to bring the game to Microsoft's console.
"It's gonna be cool walking into a retailer and seeing my game [in] the store," Greene said.
The Xbox One version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will launch within the year, though no specific release date has been given. The arrival of the multiplayer shooter as an exclusive to the Xbox One platform, however, could possibly single-handedly bring it in step with the more successful PlayStation 4 and the recently surging Nintendo Switch.
