A new trailer for the Shadow of the Colossus remake just debuted at the Tokyo Game Show, and it's breathtaking.
The game, originally released as a PlayStation 2 title in 2005, was actually remade in 2011 for the PS3. But Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida promised it would be a full remake — as in, the game will virtually be similar to every way in the 2005 original, but with the assets remastered and remade.
Shadow Of The Colossus Remake
Announced in June during E3, Bluepoint is developing the Shadow of the Colossus remake for PS4. The studio previously worked on the 2011 Shadow of the Colossus remake, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War Collection, and Gravity Rush Remastered, just to name a few.
Back when the game launched over a decade ago, it was quite a revelation for many players, notes Business Insider. It involved defeating giants and bizarre creatures, and featured a heavily emotional component. It follows a young man named Wander who enters a forbidden land. He must set out and defeat 16 giant creatures known as colossi to bring a girl called Mono back to life. The game was directed by Fumito Ueda, creator of 2001's Ico and 2016's The Last Guardian.
Shadow Of The Colossus Trailer
The trailer shows footage captured on a PS4 Pro system, it's worth noting. It's almost impossible not to be stunned by how gorgeous this game looks now that it's been remade. That's not to say the original game wasn't beautiful, of course. But the cleaned-up and higher-resolution assets help make everything look incredibly nicer and sharper.
Gone are the blurry and jagged graphics of the original title. It's clear Bluepoint went to great lengths to add an insane amount of extra detail, in addition to a more stable framerate. As a result, the game looks every bit as polished as ever. Shadow of the Colossus fans would be extremely proud of this remake, and that's just from a video that's barely a minute and a half long.
Take a look at IGN's side-by-side comparison video and prepare to be dumbfounded by just how much the original has improved visually. It's almost a night-and-day difference.
Shadow of the Colossus comes out on PS4 and PS4 Pro sometime in 2018. Watch the trailer below and as always, feel free to sound off in the comments section below if you have any thoughts!
