The next Samsung wearable device has been spotted in a Federal Communications Commission listing, but a lot of questions remain regarding the mysterious product.
The wearable device could be unveiled as soon as Aug. 23 at the company's planned Unpacked event in New York, where Samsung will be officially announcing the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 8.
Samsung Gear Sport: What We Know So Far
The FCC listing, spotted by Android Headlines, debunked previous rumors that the next Samsung wearable device will be named the Samsung Gear Pop. According to discovered label documentation, the device will be sold as the Samsung Gear Sport.
The listing, however, only shows a schematic of the bottom of the device. Samsung requested for the rest of the documents, which includes the description and specifications of its next wearable device, to be kept confidential.
Aside from knowing what the back of the Samsung Gear Sport looks like, we also know that it will have onboard Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Its name also means that it will be running on Samsung's own Tizen operating system, as Gear devices run on Tizen and Galaxy devices run on Android.
However, beyond those details, the next Samsung wearable device remains a mystery. There is no indication on whether the Samsung Gear Sport will be a full-fledged smartwatch or a simpler fitness tracker, though its name hints that it will have an expanded sports focus compared to previous Samsung wearable devices.
Chief rival Apple has moved the direction of the Apple Watch toward fitness, so releasing a sports-focused Samsung Gear device will help it maintain a certain level of competition.
When Will The Samsung Gear Sport Be Unveiled?
The specific announcement date for the Samsung Gear Sport is not yet known, but with the wearable device passing through the FCC, that day should be drawing near.
The popular theory is that it will serve as second fiddle to the Galaxy Note 8 for its long-awaited unveiling on Aug. 23 in New York. However, there is also a possibility that the Samsung Gear Sport will be announced at another Unpacked event right before the annual IFA event, which will run from Sept. 1 to Sept. 6 in Berlin. This could definitely happen as Samsung introduced a new generation of Gear smartwatches in the same manner last year.
Meanwhile, Samsung is busy preparing for the long-awaited announcement of the Galaxy Note 8. The final Galaxy Note 8 specifications have been leaked, as well as the possibility of a global Galaxy Note 8 release date on Sept.15.
