A new report claims that Samsung is preparing to announce its next-generation flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in March 2015.
Apple and Samsung are the two biggest players in the smartphone game and 2014 has been very fruitful for Apple and its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phablet. After the smartphones went on sale in September, it was extremely hard to track down both models, especially the large 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Apple increased production of the handset to try to meet demand and wait times for the company's first phablet now show a shipping estimate of 3-5 business days from its online store.
Samsung, on the other hand, has been in the phablet arena since it launched the original Galaxy Note in 2011 and this year the company took a two-pronged approach to maintaining its lead in the jumbo-sized smartphone market. Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 4 in October and quickly followed up with the curved-display Galaxy Note Edge in November. Now a new report claims that Samsung is planning to battle Apple's iPhone 6 Plus with its upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note Edge 6.
SamMobile is reporting that Samsung is going back to the drawing board to develop the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The project has been code-named "Project Zero" and is meant to produce two smartphones that have the same kind of appeal and sales numbers of its previous flagship Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4. The company has not seen the same success with its current Galaxy S5, with many reviewers claiming the handset wasn't enough of an upgrade over its predecessor.
Samsung will reportedly take a page out of its current Galaxy Note playbook and will unveil both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge alongside each other. The smartphones are expected to have the same internals, just as the Note 4 and Note Edge do, but will highlight Samsung's return to innovation and design as part of Project Zero.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are expected to feature 2560 x 1440 Quad HD displays (curved for S6 Edge) and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 or Samsung 64-bit Exynos 7420 processor. The phablets will likely pack in a 16/20-megapixel rear camera and come with 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB of internal storage and include Broadcom's new BCM4773 sensor chip.
