Walmart Now Canceling Super NES Classic Edition Preorders: Turns Out It Went Live By Mistake

If you managed to preorder a Super NES Classic Edition from Walmart, chances are Walmart just canceled your order. Apologies are due, of course, but hear this: preorders weren't even supposed to go live, reports now say.

Preordered A Super NES Classic Edition? No, You Actually Didn't

Several customers are now reporting that their Super NES Classic Edition preorders were canceled. Preorders for the plaything went live Friday, July 21 then immediately sold out, as expected. After a little over half an hour, it went out of stock and the website crashed.

The next day, customers who secured a preorder began reporting cancelations, with Walmart saying it's because of payment information problems. But that runs in conflict with what many believe actually occurred: that Walmart wasn't supposed to toggle the preorders live until next week or so.

Website Error Caused Preorders To Go Live

A purported screenshot shared on Twitter sheds more light into this. In it, a customer chats with a Walmart customer service representative about the canceled preorders. They said that preorders went live because of a "website error, since the manufacturer doesn't have the preorder yet."

"The orders that were already placed will be cancelled," said the representative.

Other customers are now also beginning to send screenshots of their own chats with Walmart customer representatives, who practically say the same thing. The item simply wasn't scheduled to be displayed yet. Walmart also now seems to corroborate the scheduling mix-up.

That being said, the Super NES Classic Edition will be available again soon, according to one representative.

It's not clear, however, if Walmart canceled all the preorders, but this appears to be the case. Some people's preorders, however, seem to be just fine. Walmart even congratulated some of them for securing a preorder.

Super NES Classic Edition

Packed with 21 games, the Super NES Classic Edition is the miniature iteration of the SNES, released sometime in the early '90s. It follows the wildly successful yet minimally stocked NES Classic Edition.

Nintendo has yet to confirm whether it has learned its lesson when it comes to supply. The NES Classic Edition is an unfortunate tale: launching to enormous fanfare and clamor — so enormous, in fact, that Nintendo couldn't produce enough of it, or didn't anticipate such a response. We actually don't know which is which. The console met its totally unexpected death just months after being released.

Hopefully, the Super NES Classic Edition suffers a better fate.
