Apple released its newest holiday ad that gives a glimpse of how families today might misunderstand kids in this age of smartphones. The TV advertisement titled "Misunderstood" features how one teen seemed to be detached from the rest of the family during the holidays only for them to find out later that the boy was capturing some of the most precious moments of their Christmas with his iPhone 5s.
The "Misunderstood" video has gone viral with more than 1.2 million views and 14,800 likes on YouTube. It has been making headlines since its launch and shared across several social networks. Clearly, this year's ad is a good follow up to Apple's TV ad in 2011 that featured Santa using the iPhone 4s and interacting with Siri and its 2012 offering showcasing FaceTime and the iPad.
"A teenage boy surprises his family with a thoughtful holiday gift," Apple describes the video on its official YouTube channel.
As the classic Christmas song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" plays, the family holiday story unfolds. The Harris family begins their journey on a cold day to visit his grandparents. Amid the gift giving, family playing the snow, kids making a Snowman, and the family decorating the tree, the main character was just seemingly detached from all the warmth and the love. Unnoticed as he might be, the boy was all along filming his loved ones using his iPhone. With the family gathered in the living room, he grabs the remote and streams his iPhone-made family movie. It was a frame by frame display of how important his family is to him.
The new holiday ad is 90 seconds of heart-warming marketing delight with Apple hinting how its technologies can help form strong family bonds. The last frame pops "Happy Holidays" from the iPhone and iPad manufacturer.
Apple also released the full version of the "Harris family holiday" video. According to the YouTube channel description, it was really shot entirely using an iPhone 5s. So far it has received almost 180,000 views and almost 5,000 likes.
