Facebook has announced the acquisition of SportStream, which delivers social media sports coverage, to compete better with Twitter as a source of real time conversation and information around major sports events.
SportStream was founded by Paul Allen in June 2012, which offers commentary and real time stats. Interaction with friends and fans also makes SportStream informative and fun.
"Through this acquisition, we expect to meaningfully improve the ability for all of our partners to access and utilize the insights from Facebook's tools and APIs. SportStream's demonstrated track record of surfacing interesting and engaging content, along with their deep understanding of our products, means that we will be able to build a better experience for the people who use Facebook, and for our partners who depend on us for real-time insights," said Justin Osofsky, vice president of media partnerships & global operations at Facebook.
Millions of users access Facebook on a daily basis and connect with their friends and family across the globe. Facebook says it has purchased SportStream as a continued effort to improve the ability of these people to connect through their shared interests.
SportStream will let media partners such as teams, leagues, individual athletes or media outlets to create their own social media experiences, both for fans and also for their own insight.
With the purchase of SportStream, Facebook will be able to compete aggressively with Twitter by offering real-time service to its users. If something interesting is going on in the world around people such as an interesting TV serial, a major sports event, and more, they use Facebook to communicate and express their own feelings. The latest acquisition will enable the social media website to attract more users by providing detailed analysis and statistics about a game, individual player and more.
The SportStream engineering team will also assist Facebook by sharing data with all of its media partners.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
