E3 may not be here for another week, but Capcom has given fans an early gift with the announcement of the Mega Man Legacy Collection. Updated versions of the classic platformer will be arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this summer.
Mega Man Legacy Collection
The first entry in the Mega Man Legacy Collection released in 2015 brought Mega Man 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 onto modern consoles. The aforementioned games were originally released in 8-bit, but the latest entry in the series makes the jump to 16- and 32-bit consoles. The upcoming version of the Legacy Collection will include 7, 8, 9, and 10.
"This collection spans the evolution--and retro revolution--of the classic side-scrolling series," said Capcom.
Help For Newcomers
The upcoming release promises to make things a bit easier for newcomers to the franchise by offering the Extra Armor feature which reduces damage by half. While purists might decry this feature, it will be a good way to ease newer players into the games especially since games from that era were known for their punishing difficulty.
Another feature that might be useful to veterans and newcomers alike is the increased number of checkpoints that will be added. This should make the game more playable in short bursts. Some fans might argue that reduced checkpoints increased the game's challenge, but they also made it frustrating to play.
It worked well when the games were geared toward kids who could spend hours playing games, but this collection is banking on nostalgia. A lot of people who grew up with the series may have no time to devote to long hours of gaming sessions. Besides, the Extra Armor mode, as far as has been reported, is an optional feature.
Challenges For Veterans
That being said, the game will also feature some new content for longtime fans. The Challenge Mode will remix stages and allow users to compete against one another in online leaderboards. It isn't a complete revamp by any means, but it should provide players with new challenges.
As an added bonus, the Museum will return to Mega Man Legacy Collection. While not a game mode in and of itself, this collection of sketches, artwork, development material, and full music player, should be a fun feature for old school fans.
Mega Man Legacy Collection Price And Release Date
Mega Man Legacy Collection will be shown off at E3 and will be released not long after. The game is currently slated for a release date of Aug. 8 and will cost $20 for the digital or physical version.
