John Oliver Says No More Pardoned Turkeys For Thanksgiving

There are plenty of Thanksgiving traditions that everyone loves. Food, family, indigestion - they're all pretty standard, but there are some weird rituals associated with Thanksgiving as well. Every year, the President of the United States formally pardons one turkey for seemingly no point whatsoever. It's not just a certificate or photo, either - it's an actual event, with a real turkey and everything.

Not only does it serve literally no purpose whatsoever, but no one even pays attention to it anymore. Sure, everyone hears about how President Obama pardoned another turkey, but does anyone go out of their way to watch him do it? And are we 100% certain that this turkey doesn't just wind up on a dinner table the following year?

This year, it might be time to change things up, and John Oliver has a plan to really turn our weirdest Thanksgiving tradition around:

He does have a point - if the pardoned turkey is just a normal bird, then it should taste just as good as its brethren, right?

Currently, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is on hiatus; the show will return to HBO in February 2015.
