Swedish game developer Mojang said the successful sandbox game, Minecraft, will debut on Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) on Tuesday, December 17.
On Monday, December 16, the game developer confirmed the launch of Minecraft for PS3 on the PlayStation blog. Mojang announced that Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be available for download from the PlayStation Network (PSN) in North America from December 17.
The PlayStation 4 (PS4) Edition and PS Vita Edition of the game is also in the pipeline but the game developer did not reveal a release date; however, Mojang indicated that gamers can expect them to release sometime next year.
Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the gaming industry, having sold over 30 million copies across all gaming platforms. Sony has sold millions of PS3 units after its release in November 2006. With the launch of the PS3 edition, Minecraft may reach millions of new customers soon.
The PC version of the game that can run on multiple operating systems including Windows, OS X and Linux has been available since 2009, although a retail version of did not release until 2011. Minecraft is also available on mobile platforms such as Android and iOS, but is dubbed as "Pocket Minecraft."
The Xbox 360 version of the game, developed by 4J Studios, was released in May 2012 and has already achieved a milestone of over 10 million copies sold. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was originally very similar in content to older PC versions; however, the game is being gradually updated to bring it closer to the current PC version.
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2013 in June this year, Microsoft also showed off a trailor of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, which will feature larger worlds, expanded multiplayer features and enhancements powered by the Xbox One. However, the game is yet to release on the latest Xbox One.
At Gamescom 2013, Sony also announced that the PS4 version of the game will release alongside the latest gaming console itself; however, the game has been delayed and may launch in 2014.
