The official word is in. THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games have both confirmed that Darksiders III's development is under way, and the game should arrive by 2018 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Darksiders fans met the news with much fanfare, especially seeing as gamers weren't certain whether THQ was still going to make another Darksiders title in light of its bankruptcy. But mope not, fans: Darksiders III is a go, and THQ even uploaded a launch trailer, screenshots, and concept art for good measure.
Darksiders III: Fury
Darksiders III will be an open-world action-adventure title that focuses on exploration and environmental puzzles. A new character, Fury, is set to headline the third installment, with the franchise's trademark hack-and-slash combat set to make a return.
The game will be set around the same time as the events of the previous entry, Darksiders II, which was released back in 2012. The newest installment will have players on a journey to combat incarnates of the Seven Deadly Sins. In the trailer, Fury accepts her quest and even encounters War, the first installment's protagonist.
Darksiders III: Fury's Magical Abilities
The Amazon listing for Darksiders III offers a bit more detail. We learn that Fury dons a whip, in addition to magical abilities that she'll use to "restore the balance between good and evil." She may take advantage of these magical abilities to enter different forms, each one lending her various weapons and attacks. Moreover, it appears players would have to use all these forms at one point, since Fury is tasked to use them one way or another to brave the environment.
Players can expect a level of familiarity with the forthcoming sequel, thanks in part to Gunfire Games' development team, which bundles former developers from Vigil Games, the studio that worked on the first two installments of the franchise. Hopefully Darksiders III ends up bringing elements of the past two games and making them even better, in addition to pouring new elements to keep the title fresh, of course.
Darksiders
For the uninitiated, the first Darksiders game was released in 2010. It let players explore an overworld with dungeons, power-ups, and enemies aplenty. The game received mostly positive reviews and was later relaunched as Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, a remastered version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Later this month, it'll arrive on the now-discontinued Wii U.
Again, the game will ship sometime in 2018. Its Amazon listing, however, says that it'll arrive on December 31, 2018, although that could simply be a placeholder. Perhaps the title will arrive earlier than that. Hopefully the latter is true because fans have waited long enough for Darksiders III.
For those who'd like to secure their copies immediately, preorders for Darksiders III are now open. Take a look at the official trailer below.
