Police have arrested a 34-year-old man suspected to be responsible for shoving a man in front of a train at the New York City subway, which lead to his death.
On Sunday, Nov. 16, 61-year-old Wai Kuen Kwok was waiting on the platform of East 167th Street station in Highbridge at around 8:45 a.m. with his wife, when he was pushed from behind and fell toward the approaching D train. Kwok was run over by the train as his wife watched on horrified. The victim died on the spot.
The suspect calmly escaped from the subway station as revealed by the surveillance footage. The police disclosed that he boarded a bus after two minutes with passersby who had been present at the scene. He got off the bus after 10 blocks as revealed by the footage and went inside a convenience store and came out smoking.
James Muriel, the train driver apologized to the Kwok family, but there was not much he could have done to avert the disaster.
"I see a body flying across the tracks. I placed the train in emergency. The train doesn't stop right away. All of my passengers were crying with me. They were consoling me. They told me it wasn't my fault," said Muriel.
The suspect - Kevin Darden - has been taken into custody more than 30 times, including being charged for attempting to set fire his sibling's house.
Darden is said to have a history of violence, including narcotics, robbery and assault.
He is also alleged to have shoved another man to a ground at a different subway station on Nov. 6. The victim of that incident got away with minor injuries.
Police arrested Darden on Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, revealed that there is no evidence to suggest that Kwok knew his attacker. Yow Ho Lee, Kwok's wife, revealed to the police that she did not know the man who shoved Kwok.
