Google Inbox is getting a new update that will allow users to receive notifications only for high-priority emails rather than for everything that crosses their inbox.
Launched back in 2014, Google's Inbox app arrived as an alternative to Gmail, not a replacement. Google Inbox aims to declutter everything and help users keep their emails in a more organized fashion where everything's easy to find and easier on the eye.
Google Inbox Highlights
The Google Inbox app organizes one's inbox by bundling similar messages into categories such as social, finance, promos, purchases, updates, and others. Users can also create their own categories and set emails from certain addresses to go straight to those categories. It's easier to keep track and the inbox looks far cleaner at a glance, with no clutter.
With everything bundled into categories, it's also far easier to delete a bunch of emails in a single swipe or click, as users can choose to clean out an entire category. At the same time, users can also snooze emails if they want to deal with them later, and those emails will return to their inbox at a better time. The Google Inbox app is designed to work best with Gmail and so far it's done a pretty good job, and it's getting even better.
Google Inbox High-Priority Email Notifications
Google Inbox has come a long way since it launched back in 2014 on an invite-only basis. It's now adding another new feature that allows users to disable notifications on all emails except those they consider high priority. This way, instead of getting notifications for each and every email received, users can get notifications only for those one or two important emails they're expecting.
The feature can be toggled on or off anytime and it has already rolled out to some users, albeit it's not available for everyone just yet. To see if the update is available for you, open the app and access the menu by tapping the three lines in the upper left corner of the app. From there, open Settings and browse to Notifications.
Not Available To All Users Yet
If the new option is available for you, it will appear under the Notification settings as "Notification Level" that allows you to set it for high priority only. It should be right between the Notifications and Vibrations toggles.
The Google Inbox app is available for both Android and iOS and the high priority notifications option likely rolled out to select users of both platforms, albeit we have no confirmation yet of any iOS spotting.
It remains to be seen when this new feature will become available to all users, but it could roll out soon enough either through a server-side update or through a regular OTA update.
