It will be difficult to bring Overwatch into the Nintendo Switch, but game director Jeff Kaplan is not yet ruling out the possibility.
Overwatch, the massively popular multiplayer shooter, is currently available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If the game will also be released on the Nintendo Switch, Blizzard will face several challenges that would make the project hard, but not impossible.
'Overwatch' For Nintendo Switch: A Challenge
Kaplan has previously stated that he was open to port Overwatch into the Nintendo Switch. However, he admitted that it would be very challenging to do so.
In an exclusive interview with Express Online, Kaplan further discussed the possibility of bringing the game to the Nintendo console.
"I think the problem is, we've really targeted our min spec in a way that we would have to revisit performance and how to get on that platform," Kaplan said. The Nintendo Switch is nowhere near as powerful as the PlayStation 4, Xbox, or PC, so bringing Overwatch into the hybrid console will require significant changes in the game.
Kaplan added that the development team is already finding the maintenance of the game on three different platforms as a challenging endeavor, along with being able to release patches for Overwatch simultaneously on these platforms. The game director expressed his pride in his team for the feat, but stated that adding a fourth platform will make things much harder.
Kaplan narrated that the first couple of patches that the development team released for Overwatch came to the PC first, followed by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as collaboration was required with Sony and Microsoft for their respective networks. The addition of the Nintendo Switch and collaboration with a third company in Nintendo might make things a lot more complicated.
Kaplan A Fan Of The Nintendo Switch
A possibility of Overwatch coming to the Nintendo Switch, however, is the fact that Kaplan is a big fan of the hybrid console, and that he has not yet ruled out the possibility that the game will be ported to the Nintendo Switch.
"Just because we're not on a platform right now, it doesn't mean we won't reconsider it in the future, so we stay aware of all these things," said Kaplan, reiterating his previous comment on the matter. Overwatch might not be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the near future, but the chance of such a thing happening is still there.
'Overwatch' News
Blizzard has released the game's 24th hero, the omnic quadruped tank Orisa, and the next big thing coming to Overwatch will be announced on April 11. It is hinted that the announcement will have something to do with the event known as the King's Row Uprising, and could include a new Tracer skin, a new map, and a new game mode.
Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Kaplan revealed that he already knows the identity of the game's 25th hero, and that early on in the development of Overwatch, there was a cat hero that rode on top of a jetpack.
