If you're an avid console gamer with enough money to burn, then you can afford to add to your collection a luxury gizmo that most gamers can't afford. You can buy a version of Microsoft's gold-plated Xbox One, which is currently available at mega departmental store Harrods.
The UK-based retailer is known to cater to the luxurious cravings of affluent shoppers. The brick and mortar shop is located in Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London and houses luxury items and brands such as Christian Loboutin, Mont Blanc,Christian Dior, Tiffany, Dalmore and Versace.
Reddit reader "SirSyhn" was the first to spot the 24-karat gold-plated Xbox One. The asking price for the luxury device is £6,000 or the equivalent of $9,773.99. The console is nestled in the department store's technology section, which showcases the best technology that money can buy. It isn't clear, however, how many gold-plated Xbox Ones are currently available at Harrods, how many have already been sold, or whether the components are gold-plated too.
Gold plating is apparently the rage in the world of electronics the past few years. A company called Goldgenie, for instance, sold a gold-plated version of the iPhone 5s for thousands of dollars this year and video game publisher THQ sent a gold-plated Wii as gift to Queen Elizabeth in 2009. Super Talent Technology, a manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, also made a 24-karat gold-plated USB drive.
This isn't the first time that Microsoft's console got a gold plating treatment either. In 2011, a 24-karat gold-plated Xbox 360 Elite was awarded o the winner at a Behemoth-sponsored gaming tournament.
The gold-plated Xbox One on display at Harrods may have a hefty price tag but it is still cheaper than the White Xbox One that was auctioned and sold for $11,300 earlier this year. The particular Xbox One is a limited edition that was handed out as gift to Microsoft employees who worked on the console.
