Samsung Galaxy S8 vs. LG G6 Speed Test: Which Smartphone Is Faster?

Two of this year's most popular phones, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the LG G6, couldn't be any more gorgeous and feature-rich: both of these phones' displays are gorgeous, and both are setting the terms of what future smartphone displays could end up looking like. The road to a bezel-less front panel is an inevitable one, and it's clear both Samsung and LG are intent to get there fast.

But apart from the aesthetics, these smartphones are powerhouses of their own accord, though Samsung's Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip has a bit of a leg up on the G6's 821 processor. Top-tier smartphones today almost aren't majorly different from each other, especially if it's running Android: you'll likely get a similar experience but under a different skin, with varying goodies baked in (read: bloatware).

What really sets these phones apart, then, is speed, performance, and the overall seamlessness one can experience from using the devices on a daily basis. So which runs and performs faster, the Galaxy S8 or the G6? Let's find out.

Galaxy S8 vs. LG G6: Bootup

Thanks to a speed test performed by YouTube user Zaryab Khan, the two devices are really duking it out neck and neck. For the test, both phones were connected to the same network. In terms of booting up the phone, the Galaxy S8 turned on faster compared with the G6, although not by much: about two to three seconds, which is frankly not that dramatic.

Galaxy S8 vs. LG G6: Loading Apps

With both phones not running any apps in the background, loading speed was then tested. First, the calls app, which launched faster on the Galaxy S8, but again, not by a dramatic leap. But something more taxing is needed to actually test which phone is faster. So the Color Switch game was launched, opening up a tiny bit faster on the Galaxy S8. The same thing happened with apps like Gun Fu, Tinder, Snapchat, Instagram, and Smash Hit. However, the speed difference isn't stellar; the G6 lagged just by a few seconds, holding up well with the Galaxy S8's more recent Snapdragon 835 chip.

But here's where things get interesting. For a fairly graphics-intensive game the likes of Subway Surfers, the Galaxy S8 loaded significantly faster, breezing through the loading screen with no hiccups compared to the G6, which was still stuck at the loading screen several seconds more.

Galaxy S8 vs. LG G6: Web Browsing

Loading Wikipedia on both phones using the Chrome browser for Android proved that the G6 was slightly faster. Loading Apple's website, however, resulted in roughly the same speeds. The real test, however, would be to load hundreds of tabs all at once and see which device will handle such a situation better. Until then, expect the Galaxy S8 and the G6 to perform pretty much at the same level of speed when browsing the internet.

All told, the Galaxy S8 is indeed much faster than the G6, but not by any impressive leaps. We've yet to see both phones handle power-hungry Play Store titles, so there's still plenty of discussion left. But as an early look, if you're deciding between the Galaxy S8 and the G6 in terms of power alone, the G6, while lagging behind the Galaxy S8, should not at all disappoint.
