Lucid Motors wants to "clear the air" for its upcoming electric car, so it is releasing its price to the public: $52,500.
Lucid Motors "Air" is the Menlo Park, California-based company's first car since its inception in 2007. First introduced in 2014 as an aluminum prototype known as "Atieva Atvus," the Lucid Air is the culmination of the company's efforts to contribute to the fledgling electric car technology. It is touted as a rival to Model S and Model 3 by Tesla, a company founded by billionaire techpreneur Elon Musk. Tesla Model S currently sells for $71,200.
Lucid Air — Revving Up Its Debut
According to its official product blog, the base price upfront for Lucid Air will be $52,500, after the $7,500 federal tax credit for EV buyers is subtracted (thus, total selling price will be $60,000.)
The four-door Lucid Air is a spacious luxury sedan boasting the latest in electric vehicle and car technology. The Air claims to have a 240-mile range on a full battery with a rear-wheel drive cranking up to 400 horsepower. The battery options can be boosted to 315- or 400-mile range options. For the drive power, one can choose to upgrade up to 1,000 horsepower on a twin-motor, all-wheel drive config.
The Lucid Air boasts a spacious and comfortable interior, with 12-way power front seats and 5-seat configuration for the rear bench. There are two trunks, one front and one rear, that have a combined capacity of 32 cubic feet, which is perfect for occasional roadtrips.
Being an electric car, the electronics are also top-notch: LED multi-lens array headlights shine upfront, while four interactive touch screens adorn the insides, complemented by a 10-speaker system for a sound driving experience. The best feature is the autonomous driving, which Lucid Motors includes, unlike rival models that ask you to pay for the autodrive feature.
For additional perks, Lucid claims that a fully loaded Air can fetch up to $100,000. In exchange for these extra cash, Lucid Air offers a car with "higher performance, greater comfort, and better efficiency than the current high-end market benchmarks."
These upgrades are:
• Fully active suspension, delivering a world-class ride
• Glass-canopy roof
• Rear executive seats that recline up to 55 degrees
• 22-way power front seats with heating, ventilation, dynamic bolsters, and massage
• 21-inch Lucid-design wheels
• 29-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation
• Expanded leather trim with corresponding material upgrades
Lucid Air — Charging Up The Electric Car Market
Air is Lucid Motors's answer to the booming electric car market. It is positioned as a high-end car competitor to Tesla Model S. Tesla burst into the scene in 2003 as a forward-thinking company headlined by billionaire Musk (PayPal, SpaceX). Tesla gained fame when in 2008 it introduced its first electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster. Tesla Model S is currently the second-best selling plug-in car in the world after Nissan Leaf.
Other prominent players in the electric car market are Chevrolet with its Bolt and Spark subcompacts, BMW i3, Honda Fit EV, Kia Soul EV, and Ford Focus Electric.
