SEGA Teases Act 2 And A New Boss For ‘Sonic Mania’

Now that gamers have their hands on the Nintendo Switch, they might soon start wondering when more titles will become available. While they still have to wait for its release, SEGA just released new details about its upcoming game Sonic Mania that will renew the excitement among Switch (and other console) gamers.

SEGA's newly released video for its retro, 2D platformer teases what gamers can look forward to when Sonic Mania finally is released. It features gameplay footage of a new Act that brings with it new mechanics and obstacles, as well as a brand new boss.

Called Green Hill Zone Act 2, this level expands on the tropical setting of Act 1. And while the Acts look similar, Act 2 is unique in its own right, featuring new routes and abilities.

This includes the zipline for traversal, the ability to use fire to burn log bridges and collect rings and power-ups, as well as Sonic's new ability called Drop Dash, which consists of the character doing a spin dash right after he hits the ground from a jump.

Along with showcasing Green Hill Zone Act 2 in action, SEGA reveled details about its new boss—or rather bosses. Called the "Hard-Boiled Heavies," these bosses are part of Eggman's new arsenal. Each of hem are equipped with special skills designed to make Sonic's life much harder.

The first of these bosses is "Heavy Gunner," a robot with the ability to fly thanks to his helicopter.

Appearing at the end of the Act 1, "Heavy Gunner is armed with a powerful rocket launcher that he uses to discourage 'speeding.'"

The new gameplay footage and details about the game just further spark excitement over this title, which blends Genesis-era Sonic with the modern times ad presenting a new experience both old and new fans are expected to enjoy.

SEGA did not drop the exact release date, still leaving it at the mysterious "spring 2017" date.

When it is released, Sonic Mania will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch
