GM has launched a new alternative to car ownership, introducing a service called Maven Reserve that lets users rent a GM car for 28 days.
Maven Reserve is part of GM's Maven on-demand vehicle rental and car-sharing service launched back in January 2016, aiming to make the offer more attractive by extending the rental period.
GM Maven Reserve: Options, Price, And Perks
Maven Reserve allows people to rent new GM vehicles for 28 days at a time, with parking, insurance and $100 in gas credit included in the package. For now, only two car models are available for this service — the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Chevrolet Volt — but don't expect this affair to be cheap.
Getting the Chevrolet Tahoe entails a $1,500 flat rate per month, while the Chevrolet Volt costs $1,100 per month. Both vehicles come with a number of additional perks such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM and 4G LTE Wi-Fi, for which GM usually charges a fee. With Maven Reserve, however, these services are bundled in the package.
Additional Maven Reserve benefits include support from Maven advisors, who can answer various questions, provide roadside assistance and help in emergency situations through GM's OnStar service.
"At Maven, we've matured our platform to meet the dynamic lifestyle needs of our members through multiple sharing solutions," says Julia Steyn, the vice president of General Motors Urban Mobility and Maven. "Maven Reserve is an innovative approach that answers requests from members for longer-term reservation options."
"Maven Reserve helps our members be there for the moments that matter most, both personally and professionally," adds Megan Stooke the chief marketing officer of General Motors Urban Mobility and Maven. "Car sharing is evolving and Maven will continue to adapt to members' wants and needs."
Maven Reserve Availability
For now, GM is offering the Maven Reserve service only in San Francisco and LA starting on Friday, March 3. In the future, however, the company plans to expand the service to more cities nationwide. GM says it chose LA and San Francisco as the first markets because they have great entertainment and entrepreneurial market demographics, for which the long-term on-demand vehicle rental service would be more appealing.
According to the company, Maven Reserve is just what Silicon Valley and Hollywood types need if they want transportation for more than a few days. In LA, for instance, the Chevrolet Tahoe could prove ideal to carry a crew between sites or fit production equipment. In San Francisco, meanwhile, the hybrid-electric Chevy Volt could be the perfect fit to travel across the city and commute to and from Silicon Valley.
With more than $1,000 to rent a GM vehicle for a month, the new Maven Reserve will obviously not be a good fit for everyone, but it nonetheless makes an attractive proposition for those who prefer long-term rental with neat perks included. Adding up the rental cost, insurance, $100 in gas credit and the free parking spot in these crowded cities, the Maven Reserve prices start to make sense.
