'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Releases New Trailer, Reveals Star-Lord’s Dad

The galaxy needs saving again. Good thing the Guardians are back. Again.

Marvel Studios has released the latest trailer for the much-anticipated movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. True to its form, the trailer featured action scenes of galactic proportions. There are giant tentacle monsters, swarm of spaceships, a golden villainess, a new cast of misfits (Mantis, Nebula), and lots of explosions. And oh, Star-Lord's dad.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is due for release this May 5. It is the first for this year's batch of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, which will include Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok.

Saving The Galaxy Not Once, But Twice

The trailer was first revealed by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel via his Twitter account. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks up where the first movie ended. The band of misfits led by Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) just finished saving the galaxy with the help of his crew: warrior brute Drax the Destroyer, assassin Gamora, bounty hunter Rocket Raccoon, and living tree Groot (who is reborn as Baby Groot). The crew is on a journey to find the truth about Peter's parentage.

Which they did. At the trailer's end, Peter meets a man who simply introduced himself as "I am your dad." But before this big reveal, the trailer is packed with signature action and humor that made the movie popular with fans.

Big guns? Check. Space invaders? Double check. Rocket cracking another fail joke? Check, check, check! The trailer also revealed the new addition to the crew: psychic alien Mantis, Thanos's daughter Nebula, and blue-skinned Ravager Yondu Udonta. The Guardians are fighting in what looks like the next villain: Ayesha, a golden High Priestess who takes the crew captive for unknown reasons. She promises to "cleanse the whole universe" of fear, jealousy, and betrayal.

Pratt joined in the promotion of the trailer by sharing the trailer via his Twitter account. The movie director James Gunn likewise tweeted the movie's new poster.

Second Time's A Charm

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 aims to repeat the blockbuster success of the first movie, which earned $773.3 million in box office worldwide.

The movie's ensemble cast brings back Pratt (Parks and Recreation), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Dave Bautista (SPECTRE), Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Michael Rooker (Jumper), and Karen Gillan (Doctor Who).

Joining for the first time are Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) who plays as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Chris Sullivan (The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) who plays as Ego the Living Planet, Star-Lord's real father.

The movie will come out on May 5 worldwide.
