The 2017 Tesla Model S P100D has been entered by Unplugged Performance to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a race happening on June 25. Faraday Future promptly announced that it will also enter the race with its FF 91 in the Exhibition Class, effectively challenging its Tesla rival to a face-off.
The Exhibition Class is the open division that is reserved for participants who do not qualify or is beyond the set of requirements of traditional racing divisions.
Tesla P100D vs Faraday Future FF 91
The performance of the Tesla P100D has been widely documented especially after the latest update that saw it zoom from 0 to 60 mph in 2.275507139-second time, breaking acceleration records.
In January, Tech Times also reported how the P100D has trounced the FF 91 using the Ludicrous+ update with an even lower acceleration speed: 2.389. This figure has beaten the speed of the Faraday Future EV by 0.001 seconds.
Of course, a lot must have happened since then and there is still significant time before the actual race. So Faraday Future can still catch up, given the fact that the performance difference is not all that huge.
Pikes Peak Race
The Pikes Peak race is going to be interesting for both P100D and the FF 91. It is an uphill climb as the vehicles race to beat the clock. Electric vehicles are favored in the race mainly because of their altitude-immune motors.
Tesla, however, could hold some advantage because its EVs have already participated and won the race previously.
In case you are wondering, the P100D will be driven by Formula Drift driver Dai Yoshihara. On the other hand, the FF 91 has Robin Shute behind the wheels. While the British wheelman is an experienced GT driver, he will be racing Pikes Peak for the first time.
Faraday Future Gambit
If it performs well in the race, Faraday Future stands to gain the most in its epic battle with the Model S. The company has been bearing the brunt of bad press lately. At a CES event, for instance, the EV sustained an unfortunate glitch as the rest of the world watched. It was followed by a string of unfortunate events such as how it is said to have scaled back production and downsized its Nevada facility. The company also saw an exodus of its top talents.
If it defeats the Tesla contender, it will not only earn invaluable bragging rights but it will also be able to showcase the reliability of its technology. The Faraday Future team underscored this by stating that it wants to test the performance of the FF 91's power train against Pikes Peak's demanding environment.
