Single's Day China nightmare: Girlfriend says No to Chinese man's proposal with 99 iPhones

For one smitten young man in Guangzhou City, China, buying his girlfriend 99 new iPhone 6 phones is the best way to express his undying love for the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Unfortunately for him, his girlfriend wasn't as smitten.

A young programmer apparently obsessed with his love for Apple's new iPhone 6 thought his girlfriend would be pleased when she saw that he purchased 99 brand new iPhone 6 to decorate his marriage proposal. Photos of the now viral proposal have started circulating on China's micro-blogging platform Weibo and were picked up by the Nanfang. The image shows the love-struck former would-be groom and his not-so-pleased partner holding a bouquet of flowers as they stood inside a giant heart made of white iPhone 6 boxes, while people outside the heart looked onward to her acceptance.

Sadly, it didn't come. And the broken-hearted young man still has to deal with the pains of enduring China's upcoming Single's Day dedicated to all un-partnered men and women in China who are either celebrating their freedom from a life filled with regrets or lamenting the failure to attract a partner who wants to wed and bed them. Single's Day happens on Nov. 11 (11/11), a date chosen for the fact that there are four lonely 1s in it.

However, it's not just his heart that was broken. The lovestruck young man still has to deal with a broken bank account. The Nanfang reports the 99 new iPhones cost him around two years' worth of savings, or approximately $82,000. Still, all hope is not lost for the besotted young programmer, who can still earn his money back if he decides to sell the iPhones on eBay. With a back story like this, he could likely get some sympathetic people paying more for the unlucky iPhones that cost him his proposal.

He could also simply surround himself with all the 99 iPhones he's got and talk to 99 Siris all day long. That shouldn't be too bad, as an informal poll by the Metro indicates one out of five men would rather have an iPhone 6 than get a girlfriend.

In recent months, China has seen a spate of entertaining and downright bizarre proposals, such as when one man arranged 99,999 red hot chili peppers into two giant hearts, probably as homage to their sizzling hot relationship, or when another spelled the words "I love you" using 1,001 hotdogs. In October, one woman took home the most non-traditional marriage proposal award in such a traditional society by dressing herself up in a wedding dress and delivering a speech that had her boyfriend shedding tears. He said yes.
