Microsoft has officially announced the lineup of games for March, of course, free to play for all Xbox Live Gold members, as with all past Games With Gold lineups.
For Xbox One, March begins with Layers of Fear, a Bloober Team psychological horror title released not too long ago. Later, Layers of Fear will be joined by co-op shooter Evolve, a Turtle Rock offspring, the same folks who created the phenomenal hit Left 4 Dead.
On the other hand, those on Xbox 360 may download Borderlands 2 until the first half of March. Heavy Weapon follows afterward, being available for March's latter half. As always, these games may also be played on Xbox One by virtue of backward compatibility.
'Layers of Fear'
Layers of Fear, a single-player horror title, was released a year ago for a number of platforms, including the Xbox One. The player assumes the role of a psychologically ill artist attempting to finish his pièce de résistance as he scales a Victorian mansion, with disturbing secrets involving the painter being discovered throughout the game.
Layers of Fear will be available as a free download on Xbox One for the whole month of March.
'Evolve'
Evolve is a first-person shooter title created by Turtle Rock Studios released in February 2015. It is set on Shear, an industrialized alien planet, and the game uniquely employs an asymmetrical structure, in which five players — one playing as the monster — battle each other.
Evolve will be available as a free download on Xbox One from March 16 to April 15.
'Borderlands 2'
Borderlands 2 is the second game in the Borderlands series, released for a number of platforms, including the Xbox 360, in 2012. Set in Planet Pandora, the game allows players to complete a campaign with central quests and side missions as one of four treasure seekers called Vault Hunters. Borderlands 2 was both a commercial and critical success.
Borderlands 2 will be available as a free download on Xbox One and Xbox 360 beginning March 1 until March 15.
'Heavy Weapon'
This 2005 side-scrolling shoot-'em-up title from PopCap games lets players guide a powerful atomic tank through a slew of stages with opposing enemy forces. While the main tank can only teeter left and right, the weapon, a turret gun, can be aimed in a span of 180 degrees.
Heavy Weapon features 19 levels, which includes two games modes: mission and survival. The former enters players into the battlefield, tasked to defeat an inordinate amount of enemies before jostling with the boss at the end. The latter is more savage, with the tank braving a surfeit of enemies until the player caves in.
Heavy Weapon will be available as a free download on Xbox One and Xbox 360 beginning March 16 until March 31.
As a reminder, you may still pick up Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime before February ends and Project CARS until March 15. Both were part of Xbox Live's Games With Gold lineup for February.
