Out of all of DC Comics' upcoming movies, Suicide Squad could end up being the most unique. In the comics, the Suicide Squad is all about a rag-tag group of super villains pulling off government-sponsored missions that other heroes are too smart to accept. It's a great twist on the formula, and if the movie stays true to its roots, there's never been a comic book movie like it.
Really, the quality of the movie will come down to how the cast works. The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy were both great movies, mostly in part to their phenomenal casts. If Suicide Squad hopes to succeed, the film will need the same. In the recent comics, the Suicide Squad is known for being led by Harley Quinn, the Joker's right-hand woman, and if the reports are true, Suicide Squad's most important cast member has just been signed.
According to Collider, Margot Robbie will play the part of Harley Quinn. The actress is well-known for her role in The Wolf of Wall Street, and was originally rumored for the part alongside a number of big names. Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto were all rumored to be in talks for roles alongside Robbie, though none of these other roles have been confirmed.
Despite the other names on the list, it's Leto's rumored role as the Joker along with Robbie in Suicide Squad that should have people talking. The character of Harley Quinn wouldn't even exist without the Joker; the two characters are intrinsically tied to one another. While Harley has branched off on her own in the comics, she always comes back to the Joker. Suicide Squad will be her first big-screen appearance, though there's no telling how Quinn's origin will be portrayed. If the Joker is indeed in the film, there may end up being more of a focus on those two over anyone else.
Right now, fans know next to nothing about the film. Director David Ayer once described the film as 'Dirty Dozen with super villains,' but that's all anyone has said about the movie. Suicide Squad was only recently confirmed to be in production as part of the Warner Bros. scheduling release, which also detailed the rest of DC's upcoming films.
If everything stays on schedule, fans should be able to see Quinn and the rest of the Suicide Squad relatively soon. While the DC Cinematic Universe doesn't start until 2016, Suicide Squad will be one of the first movies released. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will release in March 2016, while Suicide Squad follows later that year.
