Xbox One November update brings custom backgrounds, Twitter game clip sharing, and more

A post written by Microsoft's Larry Hryb, also known as Major Nelson, details the Xbox One's November System Update, which includes several new options and features for users of the gaming console.

The Xbox One update for this month, which was initially announced in October, is one of the most significant ones ever. Introducing new options for customization, features for watching TV and Xbox One Store improvements.

The first significant update is the ability of being able to feature a customized background image for a user's account of Xbox Live. The picture could be any file in the JPG or PNG file format, or any artwork from the achievements that the user has obtained in the Xbox. Users can replace the black background image with their own image by transferring it to the Xbox One through a USB drive.

Other customization updates include the return of the fields for bio and location in a user's profile, which was found in the Xbox 360 but was not originally included in the Xbox One, and a showcase that lets users choose certain items among their achievements, along with gameplay videos, to be highlighted on their profile.

Another highlight of the update is the integration of Twitter into the gaming system. With the update, gamers can now tweet their recorded game clips, find out the shows that users of Live TV are discussing on Twitter, and scroll through live chatter on Twitter regarding the show that the user is watching through the Live TV service with a feature called MiniGuide.

However, there is no dedicated twitter app yet for the Xbox One, despite these recent updates.

A new "What's On" tab that can be found on the gamer's homescreen lists several ongoing movies and shows that the user can watch on TV, the Twitch network, or other media channels.

Users can now also choose to have their Xbox One do a complete restart through a menu command. This means that gamers will no longer have to leave the comfort of their couch and walk to the Xbox One if the user wants to do a manual reset.

All these new mechanics make the Xbox One a more comprehensive entertainment console, as opposed to being a single-minded gaming machine.

The Xbox One November System Update was launched Friday last week, Nov. 7, so gamers that currently have not downloaded the update should do so as soon as they can.
