Android 4.4.2 KitKat update rolls out to Nexus devices: What you should know

Google is pushing out the much awaited Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to its Nexus devices, bringing significant camera enhancements and bug fixes.

Nexus users were the first to receive the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade and Google also pushed out the Android 4.4.1 version, which brings camera fixes to the Nexus 5. The Android 4.4.1 update also brought enhancements for users of Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

Though not all users have received Android 4.4.1 KitKat update yet, yet some have reported receiving the Android 4.4.2 update instead. The latest software update is being pushed out over the air (OTA) for the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 10, as well as both the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Nexus 7.

The build number is KOT29H and if you haven't received Android 4.4.1, it is likely you will get the Android 4.4.2 version instead. The latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat apparently removes bugs that were on Android 4.4.1.

The Android 4.4.2 software update brings several fixes, which are as follow:

- Fix for clearing the VM Indicator

- Fix for delivery of the VM Indicator

- Various additional software fixes

- Security enhancements

Google usually rolls out new software updates to its Nexus line-up of devices first, followed by other Android-powered devices. Currently, the only other devices to have benefited from Android 4.4.2 KitKat are the Google Play Edition of the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, as well as Google-owned Motorola's Moto X.

If you are impatient and do not wish to wait till the OTA update reaches your device, you can manually install the update on your own. You can download Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (2012), Nexus 7 3G (2012), Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (2013), Nexus 7 LTE (2013), and the Nexus 10 yourself.

A word of caution - if you opt for manual installation, make sure you know what you're doing!

At this juncture, it is not known when the software update will make its way to other Android-powered handsets.
