Marking a first for the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting a paid expansion pass after the game officially launches.
Downloadable content is rapidly becoming a must for popular games and Nintendo has been making considerable efforts to turn into a modern video game company. As such, Nintendo officially announced that the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be getting $20 worth of downloadable add-ons in the form of two DLCs.
Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Expansion Pass Details
It's basically a season pass that Nintendo calls an Expansion Pass. The first release will arrive this summer and will bring a new challenge called the Cave of Trials, as well as a new mode with increased difficulty and a mysterious feature for the in-game map.
The second DLC will arrive late this year during the holidays and will bring a new dungeon, as well as new story content. The paid DLCs will be available for both the Wii U and the new Nintendo Switch and they will only be available for purchase together.
Legend Of Zelda DLCs And Other Treats
Interested gamers will be able to purchase the $20 expansion pass starting on March 3, the day that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild officially hits the scene. Although gamers will get a few extras on launch day and will be able to buy the expansion pass, the actual DLC packs will come later, as detailed above.
Zelda fans who purchase the special Expansion Pass will also receive three in-game chests with extra goodies. The first chest will include a Nintendo Switch shirt, while the other two will feature in-game items. The three chests will appear immediately after the pre-purchase or purchase of the expansion pass.
"The world of Hyrule which we created for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it," says Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma, who has been producing the series. "With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore, and enjoy the game even more."
Nintendo further touts that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of its biggest and most engaging video games ever and the experience can expand with additional adventures. With this in mind, the company is working on the first-ever DLCs for the mainline Zelda series and it sounds quite exciting.
At the same time, some Zelda fans might be disappointed that the two upcoming DLCs will not be available for purchase separately, especially since people don't really know yet what to expect from a Zelda DLC since it will be a first.
In this case, it would make sense to have the option of buying the first DLC and see what it's like and decide later if they want to buy the second one as well. Alas, Nintendo seems to have made up its mind and sell the two DLCs only together, so there's that. If you have any thoughts on the matter, drop by our comment section below.
