'Overwatch' is Blizzard's first new game property in more than a decade, and it's a shooter

Remember when Blizzard shocked gamers everywhere a few months back when they canceled their next big game project, called Titan?

Well, it turns out that wasn't entirely true. Though Blizzard set Titan out to pasture, the game developer is using portions of Titan's DNA and reworking it for brand new game, called Overwatch.

Overwatch is a light-hearted, class-based shooter that looks like it might have come straight out of a Pixar film. You can watch a cinematic trailer, and actual gameplay trailer, for Overwatch below. It's getting a lot of comparisons to Valve's cartoony free-to-play shooter Team Fortress 2, and it's easy to see why.

Blizzard in a press release sets the stage for the world of Overwatch:

"The action of Overwatch takes place in a technologically advanced, highly stylized future earth. In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch had come together to restore peace to a war-torn world. After many years, the group's influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch might be gone now . . . but the world still needs heroes."

Players will be able to choose from a roster of heroes each with unique abilities, and work together as a team to defeat their enemies.

It's the first time Blizzard, a studio known for RPGs like World of Warcraft and strategy games like Starcraft, will be entering the realm of first person shooters.

"Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay," says Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment in the press release. "With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that's more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love."

The beta for Overwatch will begin sometime in 2015.
