The G-Wagen range first surfaced at Mercedes-Benz' assembly line in the 1970s and the vehicles were primarily served as utilitarian cars that can be used in off-road terrain and some even served military purposes.
The range has now come a long way as the credentials of its latest G-class vehicle called Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet is a far cry from the military transport and working class vehicles of old.
Most Luxurious G-Class
The key differentiator for the Maybach is luxury. It is now considered the most opulent in the line and this is underscored by the fact that the German automaker is reportedly going to limit the number of the produced vehicles to 99.
The Maybach has retained the angular and boxy look of its predecessors as well as the big wheels, which — in this vehicle — measures 22-inch, featuring twin alloy spokes. Ironically, this is the design language that came to be equated with the workman. Here, however, it is a mere motif for novelty as the build and the interior all indicate something that is beyond the working class's reach.
"With the fifth model after the S-Class Saloon, Pullman and Cabriolet as well as the Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 show car, we are underlining the importance of the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand for the Mercedes brand family," Dr. Jens Thiemer, marketing head at Mercedes-Benz, said in an official statement.
Features
The Mercedes Maybach will ship with a twin-turbo engine, possibly capable of 630 horsepower. It was also lengthened by nearly 2 feet to accommodate two rear seats. This area has an electric fabric top that can be rolled down if the passenger wants to recline, have a massage, or merely gaze at the sky.
Mercedes is also highlighting how the vehicle is outfitted with plush two-tone upholstery that has diamond stitching. Aside from the massage function available on all four seats, tech appointments include business consoles and thermal cup holders. The center console is also being likened to an aircraft seat as it comes with two tables.
Availability And Pricing
The Maybach is supposed to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, which also saw impressive debuts last year. Mercedes was forced to reveal more about the vehicle, however, after a leaked video surfaced in early February.
The car is expected to roll out next fall. While the automaker has so far refused to reveal pricing, you can expect to cough up an eye-watering amount. That is, of course, if you managed to snag a spot in the queue of 99.
